“Retailers in major cities Maharashtra as well as Delhi-NCR region are out of Jio Phone stock”

The Jio Happy New Year 2020 offer was announced earlier this week in India. The offer includes prepaid recharge of Rs 2,020 and Jio Phone (first impressions) with benefits such as unlimited calls (with FUP), 0.5GB data/ day, SMSes, and access to Jio Apps for a year at just Rs 2,020. However, for the past month or so, there has been a shortfall of Jio Phone units in major cities across the country, following which there were rumours that the production of the handset has been discontinued. However, that hasn’t been the case. appandphones.com has learned from industry sources that the telco is readying new stock to meet the demand. A Noida-based contract manufacturer has been given an order of 15 lakh units, which it has already started producing at its facility; according to our sources, the order has been given to MCM Telecom.

Of the 15 lakh, 3.5 lakh Jio Phone units have already been shipped to Reliance Retail warehouses and will soon be shipped to distributors. This means users won’t have to wait for long to get their hands on the Jio Phone. It should be noted that the shortage of Jio Phone units is not pan-India and affects only major markets such as Delhi-NCR, Maharashtra, etc.

Jio Phone specifications

It’s not surprising to see high demand for the Jio Phone even after two years of its launch considering its low price point and features. Jio Phone comes with 4G LTE connectivity and runs KaiOS platform out of the box. The handset ships with a 2.4-inch display, keyboard bar form factor with a QWERTY keyboard, and a dual-core processor, aided by 4GB of internal storage. The handset supports near-field communication, as well as suite of Jio-branded apps including the voice assistant HelloJio, and a Jio app store. Jio has also added support for Facebook, WhatsApp, Google Assistant, and YouTube apps for the handset in India.
