“While there has been no confirmation so far, expectations are pegged at paid apps and games on offer for free”
Apple has announced a new end-of-year offer via the App Store. The new offer has just been announced via the App Store itself, where Apple states, “Today’s surprise isn’t quite ready yet, but it will be shortly! Make sure you come back soon to check it out. Have you seen today’s other goodies? Look for the unwrapped presents on the App Store’s Apps, Games or Today tabs. From 24-29 December, you’ll find a new surprise every day on the App Store. Come back daily to discover what treat we’ve got waiting for you!“
While an official confirmation of these gifts are yet to be seen, given that the promotion is being offered via the App Store, it is most likely going to be specific, top-rated paid apps and games that would be offered for free during the six days of the Christmas period. The campaign sounds similar to Apple’s previous ’12 Days of Christmas’ programme that used to offer paid apps, games and books for free through 12 days leading up to Christmas. Despite being quite popular, Apple unceremoniously cancelled the programme in 2014, and it now appears to be making a comeback in a slightly tweaked form.
It is not yet clear if the offer is a global one — a report by 9to5Mac states that users in Australia and parts of Asia are already receiving the offer prompt on their devices, suggesting that it might indeed be for all users across the world. Apple often holds certain offers in select parts of the world, such as the Apple Music promotion that they are presently hosting. The offer is being offered through Shazam, the popular music recognition app that was acquired by the Cupertino giant last year.
Through this offer, users who download the Shazam app can discover a special offer using which they can avail six months of Apple Music for free. While this is primarily aimed at new customers, existing users can also opt in by cancelling their active Apple Music subscription, downloading Shazam, accessing the offer and subsequently drawing an extra three months of free Apple Music service.
With the free apps and games promotional expected to go underway today, it will be interesting to see what selection of apps are offered to users by Apple, and whether the list remains same for all regions, or differs with usage patterns across various parts of the world.
